It all started from a newspaper picture taken by photographer Peter Greste that spurred the Hatkoff's interest. It showed the unusual relationship between the baby hippo and the old wise tortoise at the wildlife preserve they now both call home.


"Owen had no idea how to eat. He learned how to eat and what to eat from Mzee. They swim, sit quietly in a bush -- quite typical hippo behavior being displayed by a tortoise," Kahambu said.

"Often you'll se them standing side by side, their heads slightly cocked together. I swear there is something going on between them -- some form of communication," said Peter Greste, a BBC reporter and photographer.
